Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his squad can persist in handling with player absences following disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

Havertz has been out for months after undergoing knee surgery. Hoped to be available earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when advancing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is considerably steadier and has more options,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This development presents a dilemma for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also an option after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Remain

Further fitness issues surround centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the weekend encounter. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in the backline for the table-toppers.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on squad depth during the summer has resulted in a far better place to navigate such unavailability.

Greater Options Key to Premier League Pursuit

Questioned if increased squad depth was helping their title quest, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, since the current term has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Speaking about the delay highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He could not go to the next level and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, he is a footballer who, for me, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his character, his attitude. I see him suffer on the sidelines.”

“His playing record is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I look forward to see him return with the squad playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
