The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
