The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
